چکیده

[1] Aircraft observations from a recent campaign spanning 0–40N latitude are compared to coincident observations from satellite sensors on board the Aqua satellite of temperature, ozone, water vapor and cloud properties in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Satellite observations compare well to aircraft data; temperature is generally within ±1.5 K and water vapor is within ±25% of aircraft observations for pressures above 150 hPa and mixing ratios above 10 ppmv. Satellite ozone has a positive bias in the upper troposphere, and clouds observed by the aircraft are qualitatively well represented in the satellite data. These data and analyses provide critical validation of satellite observations, which promise new global insights into this region of the atmosphere.

Validation of the Harvard Lyman-a in situ water vapor instrument: Implications for the mechanisms that control stratospheric water vapor

[1] Building on previously published details of the laboratory calibrations of the Harvard Lyman-a photofragment fluorescence hygrometer (HWV) on the NASA ER-2 and WB-57 aircraft, we describe here the validation process for HWV, which includes laboratory calibrations and intercomparisons with other Harvard water vapor instruments at water vapor mixing ratios from 0 to 10 ppmv, followed by in-fl...

Accuracy of tropospheric and stratospheric water vapor measurements by the cryogenic frost point hygrometer: Instrumental details and observations

[1] The cryogenic frost point hygrometer (CFH), currently built at the University of Colorado, is a new balloon borne hygrometer, which is capable of continuously measuring water vapor between the surface and the middle stratosphere. The design is loosely based on the old NOAA/CMDL frost point hygrometer, with improved accuracy and a number of significant new features that overcome some limitat...

New Version of Balloon Hygrometer for in Situ Water Vapour Measurements in the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratopshere (flash-bm)

The fluorescent technique is well recommended for in situ water vapor measurements in the upper troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere on board balloons, highaltitude aircrafts and rockets. New version of the balloon optical fluorescent hygrometer (FLASH-BM) is presented. Special attention is devoted to the calibration procedures, stability, accuracy and precision of the flight instrument. Ne...

Remote sensed and in situ constraints on processes affecting tropical tropospheric ozone

We use a global chemical transport model (GEOSChem) to evaluate the consistency of satellite measurements of lightning flashes and ozone precursors with in situ measurements of tropical tropospheric ozone. The measurements are tropospheric O3, NO2, and HCHO columns from the GOME satellite instrument, lightning flashes from the OTD and LIS satellite instruments, profiles of O3, CO, and relative ...

A new cavity based absorption instrument for detection of water isotopologues in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.

We describe here the Harvard integrated cavity output spectroscopy (ICOS) isotope instrument, a mid-IR infrared spectrometer using ICOS to make in situ measurements of the primary isotopologues of water vapor (H(2)O, HDO, and H(2) (18)O) in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). The long path length provided by ICOS provides the sensitivity and accuracy necessary to measure these ...
